We attended the inaugral tournament of Armed Forces versus Civilians at the Pentrebach Rugby Club, Ystrad Mnach on 26th May 2012. The day was very bright and ever so slightly breezy!! Hazel did not help the situation by forgetting the tent pegs for the gazebo!! but with a litlle begging and borrowing we managed to keep the gazebo on the ground! just!!!. It was a lovely fami;y day with great support from the lads families and lots of local supporters. It turned out that the Olympic torch was also in Cearphilly along with 50,000 people!! so a couple of the teams only just made it in time! It has to be said that Rugby7's is very fast and very hard game so you have to be fit! luckily there were some very fit young men! but this did not stop injuries happening, and by mid afternoon one of the teams were requesting help to play as due to injury they had run out of players! The final outcome was a fantastic win for Richard's Battalion 2 Royal Welsh!! A wonderful trophy was presented to the winning team and the first three teams also recieved medals for taking part. It is to happen now on an annual basis with many teams already signed up to come back next year and those who could not make it this year booking it for next as well. Huge thanks go to Maureen Franklin (Mayor of Blackwood 2011) and her husband Gary for all their hard work to make this tournament happen. Thanks also go to Pentrebach Rugby club for hosting the event and the council for allowing it to happen on such a busy weekend. A substantial amount has been raised and the final tally will be announced as soon as it has all been counted!
